Fifth Annual Pinwheels For Peace Festival

September 21, 2011

The Fifth Annual Pinwheels For Peace Festival will be hosted by Oklahoma City University on September 21, 2011. This event will be held at the McDaniel University Center near N.W. 25th Street and Florida Avenue at 4:30 in the afternoon.

The Pinwheels for Peace festival will include several activities for students such as pinwheels creation as well as live music, multicultural performances, and information booths. This event will be organized by the United Nations Association of Greater Oklahoma City.

Part of the Pinwheels for Peace project is to encourage students all over the city to come and create pinwheels that will represent peace and harmony. This was formerly an idea formulated by two teachers in Florida, last 2005, as their way to promote peace and since then has become an international celebration. In addition, this event has paved the way for art students to showcase their own contribution for the United Nations’ International Day of Peace.

Students who will be participating in the creation of pinwheels will be asked to reflect on the essence of peace and the state of staying calm without any violence or anxiety. Artworks of these students will also be featured during the festival.

A multicultural celebration of dance and music will be led by musician and artist Steve McLinn of Ojas Music. There will be a drum circle for anyone who wants to participate. Each participant must bring their own drum.  There we be many live performances, including but not limited to, St. Andrew’s Dung Lac Lion Dance Team, Little Dove Peace Dancers, the Mayan School of Dance, Dove Science, Academy Folkloric Dancers, Linwood Elementary Honor Choir, dancers from Capitol Hill High School, American Indian dancers and a traditional Japanese communal dance by Mari Leslie from the Japan-American Society of Oklahoma.

Moreover, there will be activities and display tables that will supply information about promoting peace to each participants and asks them to join in making a pinwheel for peace.
