How to Choose the Perfect Door Handles and Locks for Your Home

November 8, 2011

When it comes to decorating our homes, we often focus on the large things – which artwork we should hang on our walls, which statement décor pieces would look great in an empty room, which appliances would fit best in a particular area, etc.  As a result, we frequently overlook the small details that can also play a large role in the beautification of our homes; for example, door handles and locks

As they say, the Devil’s in the details, and as insignificant as it may seem, an elegant door handle has the ability to make a statement in a room if it is coordinated properly with the style of the door and the overall room.  So, the next time you decide to change your door handles or locks, consider these tips for finding the perfect match for your room.

Decide what type of handle and lock you will need for your door. There is a plethora of options at hardware stores, so in order to avoid becoming overwhelmed, establish a general idea of what you’re wanting before you go.

In order to help you decide, ask yourself these questions. Do you want your door handle simply open and close the door, or do you also want it to include a lock?  Are you looking for a simple handle that can easily open the door or are you looking to add more security to the door that would require more complex hardware?  A door lever allows you to easily open the door and is ideal if children will be using it; however, if you want something with more security, heavier hardware that requires an extra push to open it, may be a better option.

Now that you know what type of door handle you need, it is time to consider aesthetics of the handle. You can choose from antique bronze, stainless steel, chrome or even brass. Designs also vary from modern sleek to more of a country feel, and even the vintage. One thing to remember when it comes to design is to match your door handles with your door and your room theme. Choose a stainless steel for a modern room or a brass for a vintage setting.

You will also need to choose hinges for your door. Generally, choose hinges that match the material of your door handle. Hardware stores usually offer sets that include the door handle, hinges, and screws in one package, making this a much easier task. Ask the store personnel for guidance as to whether or not these options are available.

It is also important to be sure the the materials you choose can withstand your environment. Some materials do not do well in a salty environment, for example, and will easily become rusty and corrode. Ask a professional or your local hardware store if you are unsure of what material to buy.

Generally, the most important thing to consider when it comes to your door handle is the protection it can guarantee you. If you are shopping for your front or back door, make sure that you choose something strong and reliable enough to deter break-ins and intruders.
