USA Canoe/Kayak Relocates to Oklahoma City

December 15, 2011

Oklahoma City is proud to welcome back a member of the United States Olympics Committee, as USA Canoe/Kayak has just announced that it will be relocating its headquarters from Charlotte, NC, to Oklahoma City, where it originally resided in 2009.

The relocation of USA Canoe/Kayak has been made possible due to the ongoing development of the boathouse district located along the Oklahoma River. The transformation of the waterway by the original Metropolitan Area Projects has also contributed to the Olympics Committee’s decision to relocate.  USA Canoe/Kayak will share an office with the Oklahoma Boathouse Foundation, which will help to foster more opportunities to collaborate and further develop the river.

According to Joe Jacobi, CEO of USA Canoe/Kayak, the committee will be entering a new era in paddle sports. It will enable athletes to achieve more competitive excellence in the Olympics, Paralympics, and other international competitions.  Jacobi added that the relocation will show other sports organizations and event promoters what they can achieve in Oklahoma City.

Pat Downes, longtime Development Director of the Oklahoma City Riverfront Redevelopment Authority, also shares Jacobi’s predictions. Downes said that the transfer of USA Canoe/Kayak will present great opportunities for future development in the city and great things will follow because an Olympics-affiliated national governing body will always be on the radar of national and international sports communities.
