How to Clean Your Yard the Greener Way

August 7, 2012

It is important to clean the outside of your house from time to time in order to maintain the beauty and functionality of your outdoor space. Frequently washing the exterior of your house, as well as sweeping sidewalks and removing dead leaves and branches help create a clean, welcoming look.

However, many cleaning agents these days contain artificial ingredients and chemicals that are  harmful not only to the environment, but also to humans. Too much exposure to these chemicals can lead to health disorders and damage your lawn and garden. It is therefore important to maintain your home using eco-friendly products.

To help you clean your home the greener way, here are a few tips you can follow:

  • Use natural cleaners. One of the best ways to stay green when it comes to cleaning is to use natural cleaners. Natural ingredients are eco-friendly and safe for humans, and there are many different brands and products that are now available to choose from in your grocery store.   Just make sure that the cleaners you choose are appropriate to the type of material you are cleaning, so you do not damage your home exterior.
  • Regular pressure washing. You don’t always need to use cleaning products when washing your home exterior. To help remove debris and dirt off your deck or the sides of your home exterior, use a pressure washer instead. The pressure is strong enough to effectively remove dirt using only water.
  • As much as possible, use only mild soap and water. This combination is guaranteed effective in cleaning your home thoroughly, yet it is still safe for your family and the environment. Mild soap and water can also be used on windows, doors, and even the railings of your deck. Use a soft sponge or lint-free cloth when washing with soap and water.
  • Add protection to your outdoor furniture. If you double the protection on your outdoor furniture, you can avoid frequent heavy cleaning to remove stain and grime.  It also enables you to be able to use soap and water when do you end up cleaning them.
  • Create your own cleaning concoction. Instead of buying home cleaners at the store, you can simply mix your own. This way, you can be assured that what you use is indeed 100% natural and safe to your family and to your surroundings. Search online for ideas and recipes.
  • Use a bucket of water when washing. This will allow you to regulate your water use instead of using a free flowing hose. Bucket of water can be used when washing low areas of the house or even your car. You can limit your water use to several buckets and not waste water.
