How to Make Your Move Fun and Stress-Free for Your Kids

Moving into a new home and a new environment can be as stressful for your kids as it is for you. They need to adjust to a new school, get to know new people, create new friends, and say goodbye to their old friends, bedrooms, and lives they have been accustomed to. That is why it is very important to turn your big move into something more friendly and light for your kids, so they will not be overwhelmed by what lies ahead of them.

To help you make a stress-free and fun move, here are a few tips:

  • Inform them ahead of time. Tell your kids that you plan to move months before the big day. This will give them time to say their goodbyes and deal with their emotions one step at a time. Kids will be emotional when they know that they have to face something unknown to them. Give them the time they need, so when the day comes, it will be easier for them to let go.
  • Let them help with planning and packing. Give them authority over their own things and encourage them to give things to their friends if they no longer want or need them. Also, let them pack their own things, so they can feel excited about helping out and working like adults.
  • Give them something to look forward to. Tell them that they can choose the color of their own room or the type of bed for their bedroom. It will add to their excitement, and they will begin thinking of their new home in a positive way.
  • Bring them along when you take a look on your new home. This will reduce the adjustment they need to undergo when you start to move. Allow them to roam around your property and explore their new life.
  • Plan something fun along the way. Plan what foods you need for the move and the games you can play in the car. This will help divert their minds off the things they are leaving behind.
  • Be calm. Kids get very stressed when they see their parents feeling stressed. So, if you can manage to remain relaxed and smiling throughout your move, they will also feel at ease and be more likely to cooperate.
