Buying Furniture on a Budget

Furniture is one of the more costly items that will take a chunk out of your budget, especially if you are buying your first home or upgrading to more square footage. Luckily, there are a lot of options out there that can help you find nice pieces at an affordable cost.  Here are a few ideas:

  1. Decide what furniture you need. If you are not financially able to fully furnish an entire room at one time, then start by buying the most important furniture first. For instance, the most important piece of furniture in the living room is the couch.  The bed is the most important item in your bedroom.  Once you’ve covered the essentials, then you can start looking into additional items like nightstands, dressers,  and tables.
  2. Look for multi-purpose furniture. Multi-purpose furniture has more than one function.  Common examples are coffee tables with built-in shelves, ottomans with secret storage, or sofas that have pull-out beds for guests.
  3. Ask for hand me downs. Used furniture that is in good condition can actually provide a very unique and interesting look to your room.  Ask your relatives and friends if they have any furniture that they would be willing to give you or sell to you for a small price. You can also find deals at garage sales and estate sales.
  4. 4.       Look for clearance sales. A furniture set design from last year will often be priced lower than a single piece of brand new furniture. Retailers regularly offer last season’s models with large discounts, so you can still get stylish pieces for a great deal.
  5. Go to local markets.  They are great places to look for retailers willing to bargain with you. Try to negotiate with the retailers before you pull out your wallet; so you can get the best deal possible.  It’s also a fun experience.

With a little patience and time, you can furnish your home with furniture you’ll be happy to use for years to come.
