How to Design Your Bathroom Floor Plan

Whether you are remodeling your bathroom or designing a new one for your new home, the floor plan is the number one most important thing to consider. A bathroom floor plan is the starting point of any major bathroom project, and it is especially important for smaller bathrooms, where the space must be utilized in the best, most efficient way possible.

The best way to start designing a floor plan is to analyze your current bathroom layout or new construction dimensions and begin developing ideas for the type of bathroom you want. It can be something as simple as drawing sketch or as advanced as using a special computer programs to map out the room and where changes can be made.  Most drawings are done at a ¼” scale, where ¼” on the graph equals one foot in actual size. Scale your drawing as accurately as possible.

The furnishings that you wish to include should figure into your floor plans. Consider the sizes of your desired shower, sink, toilet, and other features, so you can determine if your ideas are feasible or if you need to scale back the size of certain things.  Account for all aspects of the bathroom, including where you want your windows to be placed, where doors should be positioned, where electrical and plumbing lines should be run, etc.

Concentrate all the plumbing in a general area, so it’s easier to make repairs if problems arise later down the road. Although plumbing can be moved, it is expensive to do, so carefully consider these details before you install anything. It is more complicated to rearrange the elements of a bathroom once you have installed your plumbing, so be sure about your design before you address that step.

Because plumbing and bathroom construction are so specialized, it is advised to use the services of professional contractors to ensure that everything is done in a proper and high-quality way, so you can avoid costly issues later down the road. Designing a bathroom is an exciting endeavor, so have fun with it and pay attention to the details, so you can create a space that you will enjoy.
