Free Public Viewing of Jupiter’s Moons Hosted by the OKCAstronomy Club

When was the last time you had the chance to see the largest planet in the solar system and all its moons with your very own eyesCome to a one-night public viewing event to be hosted by the Oklahoma City Astronomy Club to get a glimpse of some of the universe’s most spectacular wonders. The club welcomes all interested participants to view three of Jupiter’s four moons using a telescope.

Jupiter has four large moons namely Callisto, Io, Europa and Ganymede. This coming Friday, three moons, Callisto, Io and Europa will be casting their shadow on the face of the planet Jupiter. Callisto will be casting first at 9:11pm, followed by Io at 10:35pm and Europa at 12:27am. Io will be the first to exit. By 11:41pm, Io will go dim for 18 minutes as it will pass through the shadow of Callisto.

Those who wish to witness this event can participate for free at Windsurfer’s Point on Old Lakeshore Drive. Telescopes will be set up in those areas.  Club members are encouraging everyone to watch as this will be the last shadow-casting until 2032.

The Oklahoma City Astronomy Club is a membership organization that gathers like-minded lovers of astronomy to create opportunities to share interests and information. The club was founded in 1958 and since then has hosted countless parties, events, and gatherings for those who love gazing at the stars. The club offers educational opportunities, scientific contributions and intellectual growth to anyone wishing to join.
