How to Go Green in Your Kitchen

Working in your kitchen preparing food and cleaning up afterward involves a lot of energy use. Although both activities are unavoidable, there are certain things you can do to make them more eco-friendly.

Here are some helpful tips on how to go green in your kitchen:

  • Use energy efficient appliances. These days, there are many options when it comes to eco-friendly kitchen appliances. Look for the Energy Star rating and ask a lot of questions when shopping to determine which type of appliance will best fit your activities.
  • Create a composting system. Instead of throwing away ingredients and leftover foods, why not create your own composting system to utilize as fertilizer for your garden? This will help eliminate waste and also save you money when it comes to gardening.
  • Use recyclable bags when grocery shopping. Plastic bags are one of the greatest contributors to landfill waste and water pollution. By bringing your own recyclable bags to the grocery store to take your groceries home in, you reduce plastic bag consumption, which ultimately reduces their production.
  • Use natural cleaning products. Use vinegar, baking soda, and even lemon when cleaning your kitchen. These work as effectively as harmful cleaners do, but without adding chemicals to where you prepare your food. They are also significantly less expensive to use.
  • Use your appliances efficiently. This means unplugging them when not in use, not keeping your refrigerator door open for a long time, etc.
  • Wash dishes properly. Dispose of grease, food waste, and oil properly by not putting them down the sink. Not only will this prevent you from having a clogged sink, but it will also reduce sewer contamination.
