How to Properly Maintain Your Gutters at Home

During a rainstorm, your gutters play an important role in keeping your home in top shape.  The basic functionality of gutters is to collect and direct rainwater from your roof to the ground and away from your home. When water is directed away from your house, it reduces the moisture and humidity that can gradually damage your home’s foundation.

Since rainy times of the year are when gutters are most useful, summer and dry times are the perfect times to work on your gutter maintenance. That way, they will be ready for when precipitation arrives. Regularly maintaining your gutters will reduce basic wear and tear and will maximize the life of your gutters.

Here are some tips for how to maintain your gutters:

  • Schedule a seasonal check up on your gutters. Check them every one to two months to see if there are any rusty areas, leaks, or debris buildup. Rust and small damage will become worse if neglected, and the cost to fix them will grow as well. If you see small leaks or any minor damage, have it repaired as soon as possible.
  • Remove leaves and any debris inside your gutters. This obstructs the flow of water and will create a flood on top of your roof. Make sure your gutters are empty and clean, so when rain comes, they function properly and do not cause roof damage to your home.
  • Check your spouts. These are important pathways for directing water away from your home, so they need to be in top working irder. Your spouts need to be free of debris and clogs in order to water to freely pass through. If you see clogs or obstructions, remove them with a plumbing snake or hose stream.
  • Clean your drainpipes. Make sure that there are no leaves or other debris that may obstruct the flow of water. Use a hose stream or a plumbing snake to clean these as well.
  • Install metal gutter screens. This will add protection to your gutters and prevent falling leaves and debris from collecting inside. Gutter screens will only allow water to flow in, which will reduce the risk of rusting inside your gutters.
