MAPS 3 West River Trail to open June 27 with inaugural bike rides and free events

The community is invited to celebrate the opening of Oklahoma City’s new West River Trail with bike rides and a free family festival from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 27.The scenic 7.5-mile multipurpose trail connects Lake Overholser to the south bank of the Oklahoma River and is the first of three MAPS 3 trails to open.

The family festival begins at 9 a.m. at Crystal Lake, 6625 SW 15. The nonprofit organization WesTen is providing music and a bounce house, plus face painting from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and hot dogs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A 13-mile inaugural bike ride led by members of the Oklahoma Bicycle Society will begin at 9 a.m. from the Lake Overholser Dam. The cyclists will break through a ceremonial ribbon as they pass by Crystal Lake. All cyclists are invited to participate.

A kid’s bike safety class will be offered free at 10:15 a.m. at Crystal Lake during the family festival. The Oklahoma Bicycle Society will teach the class then lead a 3-mile family bike ride at 10:30 a.m.

The West River Trail north trailhead is at NW 10 and Eagle Lane, where the East Lake Overholser Trail ends. The trail follows the North Canadian River south under Interstate 40.  It wraps around the north side of Crystal Lake and ends on the south side of the Oklahoma River at Meridian Avenue near SW 15. Lighted parking lots are at both trailheads.

A mile-long portion of the trail from the Oklahoma River to MacArthur Boulevard may still be under construction.
