Preparing Your Home for Cold Weather

Cold weather can bring a number of risks to your home if you are not properly prepared. Winter  conditions can be quite harsh, not only on people, but also on your home. If you properly prepare your home, however, you can ensure that it is well-protected.

To help you prepare for the cold days ahead, below are some helpful tips:

  • Clean your rain gutters. This will prevent ice and melted water from building up on your roof and causing damage. With clean gutters, water can drain faster and not get stuck.
  • Prepare for drafts. Make sure your home is well insulated, so the warm air stays in and the cold air stays out. Stop drafts by sealing up leaks in your home. This will also help you save money on heating costs because your heating unit won’t have to work as hard to keep your home warm.
  • Have your heating system checked and repaired if necessary. Your heating system will be your best friend during the cold days, so make sure it is working well before the weather changes.
  • Trim excess branches from your trees, especially those next to your house. You don’t want them to hit your windows and rooftop during storms. Furthermore, you do not want the risk of them falling under the pressure of heavy ice and snow.
  • Have snow removal tools on hand. Get your snow shovel or snow blower ready, so you do not become stuck in your house after large snow storms.
  • Prepare your chimney. Get it cleaned and stock up on wood. Your chimney will be a great source of heat on cold nights, as well as a fun place to bond with your loved ones.
  • Install storm windows. Storm windows can protect your home during extreme weather conditions.
