New Homeless Shelter Helps More People in Oklahoma City

People with certain illnesses and trauma may prefer not to live alone. Instead, they are better off surrounded by supportive people in their lives. For some people in this type of situation, they can end up becoming homeless due to finding it difficult to live in their homes alone.

In order to fill the gap for these people, a new shelter has opened its doors to welcome them into a new housing center. The Homeless Alliance recently opened the new 20-unit WesTown Apartments center for homeless veterans and people who are chronically homeless. The new center, called the WesTown Resource Center of Homeless Alliance, is located in Northwest Oklahoma City.

The new center offers bedroom styles that are similar to college dorms. Each bedroom includes a bed, a private bathroom, a sink, a microwave, and a refrigerator. Most of the items have been donated via the wish list. Residents inside the center will be provided with regular meals and will have better access to their case workers and on-site primary care doctors.

Currently, the new shelter includes 20 beds, but the Housing Alliance and other government and non-profit organizations are looking for ways to expand the shelter to help more people. Their goal is to provide 100 units of this type.
