Things All Homeowners Should Know How to Do

Although there are many benefits to being a homeowner versus a renter, there is one thing in particular that requires more effort: maintenance. When you own a home, there is no one else to handle maintenance issues for you – you’re in charge of making things happen. Though professionals are just a call away, repair costs can add up quickly. You can avoid that by learning some of the basic skills every homeowner should know for addressing common issues and making standard repairs.

Here are a few things every homeowners should know how to do:

  • Fix a clogged toilet. This happens all the time. If you do not know how to do this, you will end up emptying your pockets by calling a plumber every time. All it takes is a plunger.
  • Fix leaks. Leaky faucets are a common problem and are something that need to be fixed before you waste so much water.
  • Clean your gutters. You should do this during fall, after the leaves have fallen and before the snow season begins. Keeping your gutters clean is important for keeping your roof in good condition and not allowing it to become damaged by built up snow and ice. Grab a ladder and a pair of work gloves, and you can do the job yourself. Always just take extra precautions when you’re climbing a ladder and have someone there with you if possible in case you were to fall.
  • Take care of your floors. Cleaning your floors is a weekly, if not daily, task. Learn which types of cleaning methods are best for each type of flooring material, so you not only clean, but help preserve them for a long-lasting life.
  • Unclog a sink. Your sink is useless if it is clogged. Learn how to unclog a sink with chemical drain cleaners or homemade cleaning solutions. Sometimes, you can clear a clog by undoing a wire hanger and using it to pull residue out of the drain.
  • Paint a wall. Though it can be tedious and time-consuming, it will save you a lot of money (and give you more flexibility) if you learn how to do it yourself. Read some tutorials online first if you are unfamiliar with the process….after the first time, you might even find you like doing it!
  • Change a lock. This is important in case your door lock is jammed or you are facing a security issue. Doing this yourself will enable you to fix the problem quickly, so you can secure your home right away without having to wait on an appointment.
